Before the storm: The chilli event came in the midst of Halloween celebrations

Students who tried to cook the world's hottest chilli were red-faced after four houses had to be industrially fumigated.

The neighbouring residents even thought there was a gas leak when the super-spicy chilli smoke billowed through the student house and properties next door as the spice seeped into the walls.

Theresa Morgan was drinking with her house mates before a Halloween-themed night out when everyone suddenly started coughing - and two became sick.

The Manchester University student, who is 19, thought it was a gas leak and rang 999.

Her party poured outside of the house, which is when they saw their neighbours walking around apologising profusely - because they were cooking the chilli, which had started to produce toxic fumes.

Speaking to student newspaper The Tab, Theresa said: "Everyone was wearing fake blood, because we were getting ready for a party.

Snapchat share: Fire engines came to the home of a group of the Manchester University students

"We had all the windows open but we were in the house when everyone started coughing.

"There wasn't any smell and we couldn't see any smoke so we thought it was something like carbon monoxide.

"We saw the neighbours around us also coughing and rushing out of their houses so I called 999 right away."

As she was on the phone, their heat-loving neighbours were explaining they were cooking the chilli to find out how hot it was when the spices got in the air and made everyone become sick.

She said: "We were all standing outside and they came out with a crate of beer and we thought well this is one way to meet the neighbours."

When the fire brigade arrived, Theresa said they rushed straight in to inspect the damage caused by the fiery chilli - but came out spluttering thanks to the nasty fumes.

Kitchen emergency: The acrid odour of the chilli even gave the firefighters pause

She said: "They went into the house and came back out coughing, so then they put on gas masks, and got a huge fan and had to fumigate the houses.

"When we found out it wasn't gas we all calmed down quite a lot. We still went out, it was almost Halloween after all."

A spokesperson for the Manchester Fire Brigade said: "One fire crew were sent to the address.

"Fire fighters spoke with the occupiers and used a high pressure ventilator fan to clear the fumes."

Housemate and second year student, Liv, said: "For once I was throwing up and it wasn't because of alcohol."

Theresa added: "Luckily the fire brigade took it well. But they did tell us it was the most stupid thing they'd been sent out for in 20 years."
